Outdoor network cameras deliver high-quality results in challenging conditions

Published by Amelia on January 28, 2011 11:29 AM

From operating in challenging weather conditions, figuring out how to best supply power to network cameras, and maintaining image quality in poor lighting, outdoor surveillance comes with its own unique set of challenges. Outdoor IP cameras have a range of features that make them well-suited to handle difficult outdoor surveillance applications.

In outdoor environments network cameras need to be equipped to handle a wide variety of weather conditions including extreme cold, humidity, dust, moisture, and more. Many outdoor cameras come with IP66 or IP67 rated housing which helps them withstand temperature extremes and other harsh weather elements. Separate outdoor camera housings are also available. These weatherproof casings come in different sizes and are designed for use with a variety of camera types including fixed IP cameras and PTZ domes. Outdoor housings can even feature built-in fans and heaters for both cold and hot environments. Some outdoor housings are available in vandal-proof versions for extra protection in hostile environments.

Many outdoor IP cameras operate using Power over Ethernet (PoE), which allows for flexible installation anywhere along a network. With PoE there's no need for a nearby power outlet. A single Ethernet cable supplies power and handles data transmissions from the camera. PoE also reduces overall surveillance system costs, eliminating the need for complicated and expensive cabling.

Outdoor cameras often have to contend with difficult lighting conditions. Many outdoor IP cameras are equipped with day/night capability that easily allows the cameras to continue to record high-quality images even when the sun goes down. IR cut filters and auto-iris lenses allow the cameras to quickly adjust to lighting conditions throughout the day, a huge benefit for those requiring 24-hour surveillance.

VideoSurveillance.com carries a large selection of Outdoor network cameras including the Axis P1344-E HDTV IP camera with day/night capability and the Axis P3343-VE and P3344-VE vandal resistant network cameras. The Vivotek FD8361 fixed dome camera provides 2-megapixel resolution and true 24-hour surveillance. The Mobotix Q24M series of cameras offers an innovative 360° view for wide-area surveillance. With sleek housing, the cameras discreetly blend into any environment.
