Security Cameras Help Brisbane Crack Down on Littering

Published by Ellen on August 27, 2012 9:06 AM

Brisbane, Australia has 16 mobile surveillance cameras currently in operation at 70 known garbage dumping sites throughout the city. And, so far, they’ve been doing a great job.

The security cameras were launched in an effort to catch litterers dumping their trash in random spots. To date, the city has spent roughly $500,000 a year cleaning up garbage. Since 2011, the city has issued a total of $68,000 in illegal dumping fines.

One man was fined $1,600 for discarding linoleum and other items in a remote area at Kuraby, which is located on the south side of Brisbane. The man was fined after one of the surveillance cameras captured his offense on video. Depending on the amount of garbage dumped, fines can range between $400 and $1600 per offense.

In the last two years, around 79 people have been fined for littering. More than 1,300 city residents have made formal complaints in that time.
