UK spy drone a crime-fighting eye in the sky
Merseyside police officers will soon utilize a small remote-controlled video surveillance helicopter in order to track criminals and record suspicious activity. The "spy drone" was originally designed for military reconnaissance missions, but its return to the air will help authorities keep a close watch over city streets and high-crime areas.
The spy drone, which is equipped with CCTV cameras, measures one meter wide and can record images from heights up to 500 meters. It weighs less than a bag of sugar.
While public opinion of the flying surveillance device is mixed, senior police officers in Merseyside are of the opinion that any tool that helps to fight crime is a good thing. Not to mention the fact that it's probably a blast to fly the thing.
Merseyside police are expecting the spy drone to be operational by June and plan on giving it a three-month trial run.
