Around the Clock Surveillance with Day/Night Network Cameras

Day/night network cameras provide around the clock surveillance in environments where artificial light is restricted. The specialized IP cameras are equipped with technology to automatically adjust to handle light-challenged situations, providing high-caliber images 24/7.

Around the Clock Surveillance

Some IP cameras will claim to offer superior low-light performance, but true day/night network cameras will automatically switch to a night mode when the light level drops below a certain point. Typically day/night cameras will capture color images throughout the day and switch to a black-and-white mode at night making use of near-infrared (IR) light.

Removable IR-Cut Filters

During the day when IR light hits the image sensor of a day/night camera colors can become distorted. Because of this, day/night cameras are equipped with a removable IR-cut filter to filter the IR light so that it doesn’t warp the colors of images captured during the day time. When the camera switches back to night mode the IR-cut filter is removed allowing the camera’s light sensitivity to reach levels as low as 0.001 lux.

IR Illuminators

IR illuminators can be used to further increase a day/night camera’s capability to capture detailed video in challenging lighting conditions. Some day/night cameras will have built-in IR illuminators and others are compatible with IR illuminator models that are sold separately. IR illuminators provide additional light in surveillance applications where the surrounding lighting environment isn’t ideal for high-quality video monitoring and recording.

VideoSurveillance.com carries a full selection of day/night IP cameras and systems, as well as IR illuminators for specific camera models. If you have questions about which solution is right for you, give us a call at (877) 478-1911.

Product Focus: Product Focus: Vivotek IP8151

When it comes to capturing clear and detailed images at night, the Vivotek IP8151 Supreme Night Visibility network camera delivers impressive results. The IP8151 fixed network camera comes with the ability to capture color footage at night and in low visibility conditions. With 1.3 megapixel resolution, the IP camera delivers sharp, clear details in color.

The IP8151 uses the latest Exmor sensor technology from Sony and features built-in tamper detection. With a removable IR-cut filter, the camera offers high-performance day and night. A built-in SD/SDHC card slot provides on-board storage.

To optimize network bandwidth and storage the Vivotek IP8151 supports H.264 compression technology to drastically reduce file sizes. The camera is also compatible with MPEG-4 and MJPEG technology, adding versatility by allowing video streams to be transmitted in those formats when needed. The IP8151 also supports Power over Ethernet (PoE), which allows for flexible installation anywhere along a network without the hassle of expensive cabling.

Power over Ethernet (PoE)

One of the benefits that comes with IP surveillance is the ability to configure and install IP-based systems using Power over Ethernet (PoE). Many network cameras today support PoE technology, which allows for incredibly flexible and cost-effective installation. With Power over Ethernet, LAN-enabled devices such as IP cameras can be powered over an IP network infrastructure using standard Ethernet cabling.

Using a single Ethernet cable, network cameras can transmit data and receive power, eliminating the need for complicated and expensive cabling. Power over Ethernet allows surveillance operators the freedom to install IP cameras anywhere along a network. Placement does not have to be dictated by where a power outlet is readily available. Data ports that the cameras and other network devices are connected to supply power to the cameras via the Ethernet cables.

An added benefit of Power over Ethernet is that uninterruptible power supplies (UPS) are easily installed for video surveillance applications that require around the clock surveillance. Incorporating UPS ensures that cameras will continue to capture images even during power outages. Wireless LAN access points can also be installed for even greater flexibility.
