Wireless surveillance network provides video security for commercial fishing harbor

Published by Dan on October 13, 2008 8:35 AM

Steveston Harbor in Richmond, British Columbia recently deployed a wireless mesh network to monitor the ebb and flow of trucks, shipping containers, and fishing equipment. 22 wireless security cameras have been installed along the harbor in an effort to deter crime, meet heightened port security regulations, and also to prepare for the 2010 Vancouver Olympics. The harbor surveillance system uses a combination of Sony networks cameras and IQinVision megapixel IP cameras.

All of the cameras are monitored live from the harbor security station. The wireless surveillance system allows for monitoring of some of the more remote portions of the harbor, including areas located three kilometers away from the station. The Sony IP cameras use MPEG-4 compression to stream high-quality video at 30 frames per second, while the IQinVision megapixel cameras capture the license plate numbers of all incoming and outgoing vehicles. Milestone IP video software is used to monitor the camera feeds.
