Video Surveillance Plan Approved by Portland City Council
Portland Police Chief Mike Reese’s plan to install video surveillance cameras throughout Old Town, Portland was approved by the Portland City Council on June 6th, 2012.
Initially Commissioner Dan Saltzman had concerns about the surveillance plan and how the police department intended to handle its operations. Once Reese drafted up a set of guidelines clearly stating how the cameras would be employed, he felt confident that they would be instrumental in lowering crime.
The cameras, spread throughout Portland’s Old Town Neighborhood, will be used to monitor and record drug deals and gang activity. The police department is eager not only to make arrests but to also decrease the amount of crime in the area as a direct result of installing the security cameras.
As reported by the Oregonian, the Electronic Video Surveillance Directive will “comply with local, state, and federal law; be used in a professional, ethical, and legal manner; and will not invade anyone’s privacy rights.”
