Japanese train stations installing extra security cameras in preparation for G-8 summit
Railway stations across Japan are expanding their video surveillance systems as anti-terrorist measures are imposed leading up to this summer's G-8 summit in Hokkaido. Tokyo Metro, which has already expanded its surveillance efforts to include 2,800 security cameras in 161 train stations, plans on increasing that number to 5,700 cameras by 2011.
Tokyo Metro is also replacing older security cameras, with new, more compact and sophisticated models with better image quality. 400 additional surveillance cameras have been installed in stations near government buildings and foreign embassies as part of the effort to increase security leading up to the G-8 summit.
East Japan Railway Co. has also increased its surveillance efforts. The company now has about 7,600 surveillance cameras in 700 stations, primarily located in the Tokyo metropolitan area and at terminal stations.
