British Columbia SkyTrain stations switch to digital video surveillance
SkyTrain stations serving riders throughout British Columbia are now being monitored by a digital IP-based surveillance system. The new system gives police officers the ability to view footage remotely, and quickly retrieve images that might be useful for tracking down suspects, while offering valuable visual evidence of any noteworthy activity.
Previously, analog CCTV cameras watched over the SkyTrain stations, but the footage was only stored for two hours on VHS tape before it was overwritten. That didn't provide investigators with much time to act upon a reported incident. Now, video footage from the 800-camera system will be stored digitally, and investigators will have up to a week to obtain the video images after an incident occurs. Along with providing greater storage capabilities, the digital surveillance system will also deliver higher-quality images, which will help in identifying suspects.
