Subway surveillance system helps NYPD crack down on crime
In New York City, where millions of people ride the subway each day, video surveillance is playing a key role in keeping crime to a minimum. Currently there are 3100 cameras installed in New York's subway stations, and the city intends to add another 1000 cameras by the end of the year.
This commitment to subway surveillance appears to be paying off, as the crime rate on trains and in station is at an all-time low, with an average of less than six felonies reported per day throughout the 468-station train system.
In the last year, the NYPD asked transit police to provide subway surveillance footage for investigation and analysis 2000 times. That's ten times the amount of requests that were made five years ago. The footage helps police to identify and arrest armed suspects and other criminals, and the cameras help provide more comprehensive coverage, given the fact that a physical police presence can't be everywhere at once.
