Security cameras aim to squelch vandalism at Moorpark train stop

Published by Dan on June 6, 2007 9:01 AM

The city of Moorpark, in Ventura County, Cal. will soon outfit its Metrolink station with six digital cameras aimed at preventing tagging, vandalism, and other crimes in the station as well as its parking areas. The train station has proven to be a popular target for graffiti artists who find its architectural design -- which includes elevated sidewalks, a large blank wall and benches -- irresistible.

Moorpark has chosen to install a rather sophisticated digital surveillance system with the hope that it will allow monitors to not only spot vandals in the act, but also clearly identify their faces. The system will include four 30-foot poles with motion detectors in the north and south parking lots. The digital security cameras are equipped for night and day facial imaging, and will provide views of both train platforms and parking lots. The surveillance footage will be fed to the Metrolink communications room where it will be archived for two weeks in case an incident of vandalism is reported and requires visual investigation. Personnel at the police station will also be able to control the cameras remotely for detailed views of incidents as they take place.

The digital security system is expected to be installed and fully operational within the next three months.
