High crime rates along Gresham MAX line could stem from lack of surveillance cameras
TriMet's MAX light rail service, which transports riders throughout Portland, Oregon, and its surrounding areas, has come under fire because of the delayed installation of security cameras at the Gresham Central Transit Center. Currently, Gresham is the only city in the area that doesn't have security cameras monitoring its MAX line. While plans are in the works to install at least eight cameras at Gresham Central, the area continues to suffer from high crime rates.
Last week a 71-year-old man was beaten by a youth at the Gresham station. Had the cameras been installed in time, there would be visual evidence of the incident. Unfortunately, lack of funding followed by contractor issues has delayed the installation of security cameras along the Gresham Max line, and though officials were hoping to have the cameras operational by now, it appears it will be another week before the added video security arrives.
Though Gresham is beefing up physical security on its MAX line, police officers can't be everywhere at once. Transit centers, when not properly monitored, can be extremely dangerous places, especially late at night. The new cameras will help to protect passengers from potential threats, and should provide and added sense of security by deterring criminal activity.
