Bus surveillance cameras hit the road in Omaha

Published by Dan on November 25, 2009 1:47 PM

The Metro Area Transit (MAT) system in Omaha, Nebraska is not only getting a new fleet of buses this year, but also a full set of surveillance cameras for each vehicle. Five strategically placed security cameras will be installed in each bus to provide comprehensive monitoring.

The obvious benefit of a bus surveillance system is of course to enhance the overall level of safety, both for passengers and drivers. Metro Area Transit also foresees another key benefit to the cameras: visual evidence for claims cases. Without detailed visual evidence, it's virtually impossible to disprove false claims. It's not uncommon for people to report injuries or accidents experienced while riding the bus, but without any way to actually prove those claims, these disputes often turn into he-said she-said scenarios. MAT's new bus surveillance system will ensure that archived video will be available in case a reported incident requires further investigation.
