Edinburgh Castle, the top tourist attraction is Scotland, is replacing its existing analog CCTV cameras with a new, IP-based video surveillance system. Using IndigoVision's IP Video technology, the new system will offer greater flexibility, remote video monitoring, and can be easily upgraded without disrupting the sensitive areas of the castle. What's most interesting is that, along with hosting millions of visitors each year, the Edinburgh Castle also continues to be occupied by the army. The military presence combined with the constant stream of tourists makes it all the more important to have an effective video security system.

IP cameras from D-Link have been chosen to monitor the Grand Canyon Skywalk, a new vista destination on the majestic canyon's western edge. The Grand Canyon Skywalk is a massive, horseshoe-shaped glass bridge suspended 4,000 feet above the Colorado River. Since it opened in 2007, over 250,000 people visit the skywalk each year. Because of the large crowds, video surveillance plays an important role in ensuring the safety and security of visitors, workers, and the facility itself. As part of a new IP-based surveillance system, D-Link network cameras were installed due to their outstanding image quality and their support for remote video monitoring.

Even wild animals need video surveillance security. South Africa’s Kruger National Park has just installed a new video system using Milestone Systems IP video management software and Axis network cameras. About 2 million tourists a day visit the 7,000 square mile park, and the animals within the borders are at risk from poachers and vehicles driving in the area.

Royal Caribbean's Oasis of the Seas, featuring 2,700 guest cabins and enough space to accommodate 6,300 passengers and 2,160 crew members, is believed to be the world's largest cruise ship. (I'm curious to know how it stacks up against the Titanic.) Providing an effective video surveillance solution for this massive vessel posed quite a challenge. To tackle the large-scale project, planners worked out a sophisticated IP surveillance network that incorporates IP cameras, devices, wireless access points and networking equipment from Cisco.

The Paris National Opera is a huge draw for tourists thanks to the theater, music and impressive architecture of the opera houses. When it came time to update the security systems for two of its opera houses, the Paris National Opera turned to Axis IP cameras for the solution.

The city of Gilroy, California recently invested in a security camera system that they’re hoping will not only deter crime, but encourage shoppers and tourists to visit the new downtown by dispelling the impression that the city is too dangerous or dingy to visit. City officials and businesses are hoping the cameras show the city cares about downtown and the visitors’ safety.
