Richmond looks to enhance city and port security with wireless surveillance

Richmond, Calif. will soon install a wireless surveillance network to protect its ports and to reduce crime and vandalism throughout the city. The incoming system will consist of 116 digital security cameras with the ability to wirelessly transmit surveillance images to Richmond police headquarters, a police dispatch center, and to Port security. The aim of the system is to deter crime, limit vandalism and illegal dumping, and provide visual evidence for prosecuting criminals.

34 cameras will be placed in high-crime areas throughout the city, while an additional 82 cameras will monitor the Port of Richmond. The cameras will operate using wireless mesh technology, which offers a great deal of flexibility as cameras can be added or repositioned anywhere along the network. Mesh technology also provides enhanced reliability when delivering video transmissions.

The system software includes cutting-edge technology which will allow users to program the cameras to spot specific activities such as graffiti and garbage dumping in unauthorized areas.

Installation of the IP cameras is expected to be completed by April.
