IR illuminators boost night video surveillance

Published by Margeaux on September 6, 2011 8:56 AM

IR illuminators are lamps that emit infrared light used by day/night cameras to produce images in complete darkness. This light is mostly invisible to the human eye, though some IR lights cast a red hue. Because they are difficult to detect in the dark, IR illuminators are especially beneficial in situations requiring discreet video surveillance.

Day/night cameras feature an IR-cut filter that enables it to capture black and white images when there isn't sufficient available light produce full color images. Some day/night network cameras have integrated IR illuminators, which is ideal in situations where installing external lamps is too obtrusive.

However, there is another option for cameras without built in IR illuminators. Standalone IR illuminators can be added to any video surveillance system with day/night cameras.

When comparing options, keep in mind that the distance and range IR illuminator covers varies from model to model. Consider how far and wide you require images to be captured, as well as the limitations of the camera lens.
