Talking security cameras look to curb graffiti in North Hollywood

Published by Dan on September 19, 2007 4:51 PM

The graffiti problem in Los Angeles' North Hollywood area is so bad, the city has decided to employ high-tech security cameras that not only monitor specific areas, they also speak to taggers caught in the act.

The surveillance cameras operate using motion detection. When acts of graffiti are spotted, an automated voice alerts the suspected taggers that they're on camera and that they should leave the area. Currently, there are 28 cameras positioned throughout the city in strategic areas where graffiti has been a serious ongoing issue. While it might seem alarming to some that the cameras actually speak from above, residents in the targeted areas appear to support the idea of cracking down on graffiti, especially in locations where walls have essentially turned into large canvases for taggers.
