Video Surveillance: a year in review

2007 has been a great year for video surveillance - improvements in technology, widespread applications, and predictions for the future of network cameras. Here are some of our most memorable posts:

A courthouse surveillance camera in Santa Fe, NM captures what seems to be a strange apparition wandering around the parking lot. Was it the ghost of a Santa Fe citizen whose afterlife remains beleaguered by unpaid parking tickets? No....just a bug.

New York City should really have its own tag - 2007 was the year of surveillance controversy in the Big Apple. Mayor Michael Bloomberg made very clear his opinions on surveillance and its place in the city, along with Katherine Mangu-Ward of Reason Magazine and Federal Judge Charles Haight, Jr., who sought to further define the term "video surveillance" in the context of the NYPD and protests. New legislation was passed about video surveillance and nightclub safety, and pharmacy surveillance cameras inside a Duane Reade curtailed a trio of robbers in early March. Phew!

Municipal video surveillance systems popped up around the world - in places like Brooklyn, Kazan, Russia, Garland, TX, St. Louis, MO, Helsinki, Finland and more.

Social networking sites like YouTube have sprung into action in many kidnapping and theft cases, including that of missing 18 year old Kelsey Smith, broadcasting surveillance footage to a wide audience to try and solve the crime quickly.

IP Camera/network camera's share in the surveillance market grew and is continuing to grow - expected to outpace analog CCTV cameras by 2011.

So what's next in 2008? Stay tuned - the video surveillance blog has all the latest news on video surveillance technology.
