Little Rock beefs up video surveillance for NCAA tournament
Little Rock Arkansas is putting its new downtown video network to the test this weekend when the NCAA men's basketball tournament rolls into town. The system, which has been set up to monitor downtown businesses, will help to secure the area when an estimated 30,000 visitors flock Alltel Arena this weekend for a taste of March Madness.
Ordinarily, the city's surveillance cameras operate using a preprogrammed motion detection sequence, but this weekend, police officers and police academy graduates will take turns monitoring the cameras continuously in order to keep track of all activity throughout the downtown core. The security cameras feature panning and zooming capabilities, and can even read license plates up to eight blocks away.
Video footage from the surveillance cameras will be stored on a hard drive for 14 days, with still images available for investigation purposes. Along with keeping watch over the crowds this weekend, the video surveillance system could also be used for investigating traffic accidents.
