H.264 IP cameras provide video security for Louisville's new basketball arena
This September, the University of Louisville is opening up a state-of-the-art basketball arena deliciously dubbed "The KFC Yum! Center." Despite its amusing name, this is truly a first-class facility, from design and layout all the way to its video security system. Currently there are 106 IP network cameras monitoring the arena, with an additional 40 security cameras providing coverage of the parking garage. Almost all of the IP cameras operate using Power over Ethernet for flexible installation anywhere along the network infrastructure. And to save bandwidth and storage space, the cameras utilize H.264 video compression.
H.264 is the latest compression technology sweeping the surveillance industry. It's available with many new IP camera models. Compared to previous technologies such as MJPEG and MPEG-4, H.264 compression can significantly reduce video file sizes without compromising image quality. This makes it ideal for surveillance applications requiring high-resolution or megapixel video. In the case of the KFC Yum! Center, H.264 allows the system to capture and record high-quality video images while conserving bandwidth on the facility's network backbone.
