University of East Anglia installs Axis IP cameras for campus surveillance

The University of East Anglia, in Norwich, recently installed an IP-based surveillance system that employs Axis IP cameras and video servers, operating with Milestone Enterprise video management software. The system uses a mix of IP cameras, including the Axis 232D, and Axis 233D Network Dome cameras, to monitor the university's 320-acre campus. The cameras will help to ensure a safer environment for the 15,000 students and 3,000 staff who currently spend their time on the University grounds.

An upgrade over the University's existing analog CCTV system, the new IP surveillance equipment offers a number of benefits including remote monitoring, better video quality, digital storage, and easy scalability if additional cameras are required. The first part of the project involved positioning Axis IP cameras to monitor the campus' central outdoor meeting place, which also includes a strip of banks and shops. With 35x optical zoom, and the ability to quickly zero in on specific details, the Axis 233D Network Dome camera was the ideal choice for monitoring this type of open area.

The University is also still able to use its existing analog cameras, with Axis 241Q video servers digitizing their video signals. Live and recorded footage from both the old CCTV cameras and the Axis IP cameras is now accessible remotely, and from the university's security control room, using Milestone Enterprise video management software.
