Merrimack School District gets approval to install school security cameras
New Hampshire's Merrimack School District received voter approval this week to install security cameras in all of its schools in time for the 2008-2009 school year. The surveillance cameras will help to cut down on vandalism, theft, and property damage, as well as bullying, drug dealing, violence, and other unwanted threats on school grounds.
Last weekend, vandals used a BB gun to shoot out 13 windows at Thorntons Ferry Elementary. Without any form of video security, the school had no visual evidence to identify who broke the windows. In another recent case where security cameras could have proved helpful, a student left a bomb threat written on a bathroom wall. Hallway cameras might have captured valuable images of those entering the bathroom around the time the note was left.
Funding for the new security cameras has been factored into the Merrimack School District's 2008-2009 budget. The district plans on installing surveillance cameras outside of the middle school and elementary schools, and inside the high school, to monitor hallways, doorways, and the cafeteria.
