Elementary school adds video surveillance to security system

Published by Jennifer on March 14, 2008 3:21 PM

An attempted abduction at Westview Elementary School in Champaign, IL had school administrators scrambling to find ways to boost their security. The answer? A school security camera.

Now, instead of unlocking the school's doors at the end of the day, the doors will remain locked, and visitors must ring a bell to be granted access. A surveillance camera stationed at the door broadcasts footage to the school office, so staff and after school program administrators can see the person outside and unlock the door if they are permitted to enter.

The addition of the security camera was prompted when a man posing as a parent attempted to pick up a child after school. The secretary, who did not recognize the man or his car, notified authorities and the child is safe.
