Skate shop's security camera provides valuable footage, despite being stolen
Stealing a security camera is one of the more foolish moves a robber can pull. Turning around and running away is probably a better option. Reason being, the camera itself does not typically store the recorded footage. In the case of IP cameras, video footage is transmitted across a network and stored digitally on a server, hard drive, or network video recorder. While analog surveillance cameras transmit video which is recorded and archived on cassette tapes. Anyone who attempts to tamper with or steal a security camera is going to show up on the recordings, and it's quite possible that someone will even be watching the scene unfold live. A recent incident involving a skate shop in Indianapolis provides us with a good example of how even a stolen camera can stop thieves in their tracks and help turn them in.
The owner of the store installed a single-camera surveillance system after her skateboard shop was robbed last year. $10,000 worth of merchandise was stolen and the shop was trashed. She set up a surveillance camera to prevent such an incident from occurring again, and it worked. This time the thieves were attempting to break into the shop when they noticed the camera. Bewildered, they gazed up at its lens for several moments before deciding the best way to pretend the attempted break-in never occurred would be to steal the camera. Unfortunately for them, the entire process of bringing in a nearby ladder, climbing up and crudely removing the camera was all documented, and the footage has since been released to the public. Once the thieves are identified and found, they will face up to 3 years in prison and a $10,000 fine.
