Mobotix camera captures volcanic eruption in Iceland

Published by Amelia on August 13, 2010 2:56 PM

Demonstrating just how diverse IP surveillance camera capabilities are, a Mobotix network camera was installed at the top of the volcano Valahnukur in the Eyjafjallajokull glacier in Iceland, the same volcano that erupted clouds of ash that closed down airports all over Northern Europe. Fortuitously, the Mobotix camera was mounted just before significant volcanic activity occurred. Anticipating volcanic events, the camera was installed to capture footage of the eruption and share it with the public via a live web feed.

Installing a camera on the top of volcano presented unique challenges that aren’t typically encountered when routinely installing IP network cameras. The Mobotix camera needed to be connected to both electricity and the Internet in order to broadcast the footage of the eruption over a live web stream. Luckily the Mobotix camera was in close proximity to a transmitter installed on a nearby mountain top.

Another consideration when choosing what kind of camera would be placed on the volcano was the rigorous elements from close proximity to an active and erupting volcano. Harsh weather conditions from wind, rain, snow, salt, and volcanic ash were all part of the weather system in the glacier. The Mobotix camera was chosen because of its durability, high-resolution images and comparable ease of use in the face of volcanic-sized obstacles.
