Milestone and Axis partner to create surveillance solution for University of Illinois

Published by Amelia on October 12, 2010 4:22 PM

With over 400 facilities and 53,000 students, staff and visitors to contend with on a daily basis, efficiently monitoring the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign campus was a challenge for the 55-member campus police force. To help combat everyday challenges such as thefts on and around campus, including a string of laptop thefts from the university library, security officials turned to Milestone video management software and Axis network cameras to provide the school with a secure surveillance solution that would help the police increase security around campus.

The university is planning a three to five year deployment of 4,500 cameras around campus that will all be managed in a central location using Milestone XProtect video management software. Milestone provides an IP-based video software that centralizes the surveillance system into one easy-to-operate solution. The software is compatible with more than 80 difference video surveillance vendors giving the school flexible options when it comes to choosing what IP cameras to use.

Individual departments within the Urbana-Champaign campus will make the decision to install a surveillance system, and each department head has access to technical specialists that help provide assessments and equipment recommendations based on the specific needs and layout of the facilities. Because Milestone software can be used with over 80 different video surveillance vendors, each department can choose IP surveillance cameras that fit their needs and budget without worrying about compatibility with the Milestone software.

So far most of the cameras being used are Axis network cameras. The surveillance solutions being deployed around campus range from smaller 6-camera solutions right on up to larger operations involving over 70 cameras. Facilities across campus including the new Campus Rec Center are using a combination of IP camera varieties including fixed, megapixel and pan/tilt/zoom cameras.
