School surveillance system features JVC IP cameras and NVRs

Published by Dan on November 9, 2009 4:03 PM

Oregon's Canby School District has deployed a new IP-based surveillance network supporting 48 IP cameras from JVC. The system features a combination of fixed mini-dome cameras and box cameras monitoring nine facility sites, including six elementary schools, a middle school, high school, and the district business office. All of the cameras are triggered by motion detection, and record to JVC network video recorders.

At Canby High School, 32 JVC network cameras have been installed throughout the school's five-building campus. Footage from the cameras is delivered to two 16-channel JVC VR-N1600U NVRs. The district's middle school has a similar, yet smaller, setup featuring eight surveillance cameras running to an NVR, while the remaining IP cameras are split between the elementary schools and the district office (which also houses the fourth network video recorder).

The system operates along the school district's existing virtual local area network (VLAN), which allows users to view live feeds and recorded video without interrupting regular network traffic. Administrators can respond quickly to security problems as they happen, and review any disturbances or reported incidents that require further analysis. Besides serving as an investigative tool, the mere presence of the cameras on school grounds should also prove useful as a strong deterrent.
