Axis network cameras monitor cargo containers in Virginia port
With an expected increase in rail cargo container volume flowing through marine terminals, the Virginia Port Authority recently pushed for a video surveillance upgrade. Virginia International Terminals, which operates the terminals owned by the Authority, chose an IP surveillance solution featuring Axis network cameras to help monitor the cargo containers as they move to and from the rail yard. The new system not only enhances security, it also streamlines port operations.
Each day about 700 cargo containers move through the rail yard. To keep pace with the steady traffic, Axis network cameras are now mounted on light poles and container handling equipment throughout the area. The cameras provide inspectors with the ability to view container identification numbers, slot locations, rail car numbers, and other important data that helps to streamline operations and boost productivity. The network cameras take snapshots of each container from multiple sides. This allows inspectors to track shipments remotely, and even watch for damaged cargo boxes. The process is much faster than physically walking up and down the container tracks.
The rail yard surveillance system features 32 Axis 233D network dome cameras mounted on 100-foot high light poles. The cameras connect to the rail yard's existing IP infrastructure just like any other network device. With 35x optical zoom, fast PTZ control, presets, and sophisticated motion detection, the Axis 233D provides a range of tools for efficient monitoring and tracking of containers and other rail yard operations.
