The first manufacturer of network cameras, AXIS has been an innovator in IP surveillance for over 10 years. The 211 and 211A series network cameras provide the quality you expect from AXIS, and are suitable for a surprisingly flexible range of applications.
In traditional surveillance systems, different types of cameras play different types of roles. Wall-mounted and bullet cameras are used for detail shots - getting specific information like facial features on persons of interest, for example. Dome cameras are for getting an overall glance at a store's sales floor or the main area of an office. The Axis 215PTZ network camera, available mid-June, may change all of this forever.
Network camera giant Axis Communications announced last week the sale of its 1 millionth camera. That milestone is especially noteworthy when you consider that a high percentage of those sales have occurred in the last couple years. And the company has good reason to think it won't be long before its next million, or even 10 million IP network cameras are sold.
An important, and seemingly obvious, key to the success of any network camera solution is to avoid blocked, manipulated, or redirected video signals. This is especially critical in surveillance locations where the cameras are susceptible to damage, vandalism or tampering, for instance in schools, prisons, transit stations, and harsh outdoor environments. One way to prevent lost signals in these situations is to employ cameras with weather-proof or vandal-proof housing. And recently, Axis Communications came up with an even more sophisticated solution; an "Active Tampering Alarm" that automatically alerts security staff any time a camera disruption is detected.
Car manufacturing sites can benefit greatly from video surveillance systems for a variety of reasons. Not only do surveillance cameras help to secure these facilities, but they can also protect employees from the potential dangers that exist when working with automated machinery. The KIA Motors production plant in Slovakia, which recently installed a comprehensive surveillance network, presents us with a great example of how a manufacturing facility can benefit from video security.
Greece's Egnatia Motorway is a monumental road construction project linking Europe and Asia. Developers have turned to Axis network cameras as a way to provide wireless traffic surveillance to the motorway's most difficult route, a 9 km stretch of varied terrain that runs from the Metsovo interchange to the Peristeri interchange. The Motorway has installed 14 Axis 213 PTZ network cameras to watch traffic and provide video security along this section, which includes two interchanges, six tunnels, and two bridges.

Cody High School in Wyoming recently upgraded their analog video surveillance system to a new IP-based surveillance solution powered by Axis network cameras. The school decided to make the switch after encountering problems with the video quality of their analog cameras. The images from the outdated system were coming back so pixilated that when crime or other inappropriate incidents occurred, the culprits could only be identified about 15 percent of the time. Since installing the new cameras, school administrators and authorities have been able to identify 100 percent of the culprits due to the clear, high-quality images from the Axis cameras.

The four new models in the VioStor series all feature dual-core Intel® Atom™ processors with 1 GB memory that delivers network throughput of 176Mbps. This produces high-quality megapixel recordings and saves on power consumption.
As the first fixed dome camera with P-Iris on the market, the Axis P3346 doesn’t skimp on image quality. The P3346 offers 3-megapixel resolution at 20fps in addition to wide screen HDTV at 30fps. The P-Iris control optimizes the camera’s iris position for depth of field, lens resolution and incoming light. This helps to produce the ideal sharpness and image clarity in all lighting conditions.
Milestone recently released XProtect Device Pack 5.1 that updates support for new devices on their video management software platforms including XProtect Enterprise, Professional, Essential, Go, and Corporate. The 5.1 version Device Pack also includes support for new firmware on a range of different devices and solves different software issues that were related to Device Pack 5.0.

We are pleased to add the Axis P3346 camera to our arsenal of powerful surveillance tools. The P3346 is a 3-megapixel fixed dome camera featuring Axis’ new iris control system. P-Iris automatically regulates the iris opening to improve contrast, clarity, resolution and depth of field. Additionally, HDTV at 30fps provides excellent picture quality for demanding applications while H.264 compression optimizes bandwidth.
The world of video surveillance technology can feel foreign to a newcomer. That’s why Axis Communications’ Academy offers online training courses for anyone who wants to learn about the company’s products, services and solutions in the comfort of your own home or office.
One of the longest standing arguments against installing all-digital surveillance systems is that IP surveillance systems are much more expensive to install and configure than their CCTV counterparts. Axis however, recently published a white paper detailing the results of a cost comparison study between the two surveillance technologies that largely dispels the analog-is-cheaper way of thinking.
Last month Milestone Systems was awarded the 2010 Application Development Partner (ADP) of the Year for North America by Axis Communications during the annual Axis Channel Convergence Conference (ACCC). Milestone is one of the leading providers of open platform IP video management software.
For Freightliner, one of the leading intermodal rail freight operators in the UK, improving security and streamlining surveillance efficiency were top priorities when it came time to choose an IP system to replace their outdated analog surveillance infrastructure. Using Milestone software and a real-time video analytics system embedded in an Axis encoder, SCJ implemented a comprehensive real-time surveillance solution.
If you’re looking for IP cameras that will provide much higher resolution and clearer video images than traditional security cameras, then megapixel cameras may be the right solution for you. With improved resolution megapixel cameras significantly increase the camera’s field of view without losing any image detail. A single megapixel camera can cover areas that would normally be monitored by multiple surveillance cameras.
In environments where artificial light is restricted, it can be challenging to capture high-quality images. When lighting conditions are less than optimal, day/night IP cameras are equipped to automatically adjust to handle light-challenged situations. Using infrared technology, day/night cameras offer 24/7 surveillance, providing high-caliber images around the clock.
Like megapixel cameras, HDTV network cameras offer superb image detail and outstanding color representation. HDTV cameras capture crisp and clear images formatted for modern screens and TVs. For applications where full frame rates and high-quality imaging are a priority, HDTV cameras are an ideal fit.
A recent study sponsored by Axis and conducted by the Loss Prevention Research Council (LPRC) found that 87% of retailers who currently use CCTV analog technology for surveillance in their retail stores are considering making the switch to IP cameras. Loss prevention executives from 49 national and regional retail companies answered questions about their current use of surveillance technology, their feelings about the overall impact of surveillance on loss prevention, and their thoughts about analog vs. IP surveillance systems.
