What's interesting about this surveillance solution is that it has less to do with security, and more with studying customer behavior. Tampa Bay Downs, the self-proclaimed "only thoroughbred racetrack on Florida's west coast," recently had to upgrade it video surveillance system in order to meet new Florida regulations for electronic surveillance in gaming facilities. The key to the upgrade was transitioning from an analog solution to an IP-based digital system to monitor the facility's 30-table Silks Poker Room. Previously, the analog CCTV cameras in the poker room transmitted footage to digital video recorders (DVRs), but the system only provided moderate resolution and offered very little in the way of scalability or upgrade potential. Liverpool's Knowsley Community College has completed installation of a large-scale video surveillance system featuring 324 Axis network cameras. A study based on the installation has concluded that the IP-based solution saved the school a considerable amount of money when compared to the costs of an analog CCTV system. The bulk of the savings result from the difference in maintenance costs. While the analog system would have required yearly system maintenance from a contractor, the IP video system can be maintained by an in-house IT team.

Axis announced the release of three new cameras today - the P1311, M3011 and M3014 - all representing new advances in technology and announcing the direction of IP cameras in the future.
IP camera manufacturers Axis, Sony, and Bosch have announced that they will work together in an effort to develop a standardized interface for network video products. Currently, no such standard exists for determining how products such as IP cameras, video encoders, and recording software should communicate with each other. The companies hope to deliver a new standard of specifications for video streaming, locating IP devices, and intelligence metadata, amongst others, with the end result being greater interoperability for network video products.
Last week's Boston Marathon was not only a showcase for world-class runners, it also offered up a great opportunity for wireless IP surveillance to work its magic. This year's marathon attracted over 20,000 runners and upwards of one million spectators. In order to help provide event and crowd control, and to protect the city from potential threats during this large event, a temporary, wireless video surveillance system was deployed and linked to state and local public safety agencies. The Three Counties Fairground, located in Worcester, England, recently installed an IP-based video surveillance system to prevent vandalism and cut down on criminal activity. The Showground, which hosts horticulture shows throughout the year, will also use the surveillance system to protect plants, machinery, and livestock. Charlestown, Rhode Island's new police station was built with features designed to handle future surveillance upgrades not only for video security in and around the station, but also for monitoring the entire community. Axis Communications has added a new tele variant of the 225FD to its fixed dome network camera portfolio. The Axis 225FD is now available with either a standard lens or a telephoto lens. The standard option provides a viewing angle of 36-75 degrees, while the Axis 225FD 22mm, with its vari-focal telephoto lens, offers a viewing angle of 10-20 degrees. The tele variant is especially useful for surveillance applications involving recognition of individuals and objects from high-mounted cameras in spacious locations.

A group of assisted living and welfare facilities in Matsusaka City, Japan, has turned to Axis network cameras in an effort to help ensure the safety of its residents. The Taiyounosato Social Welfare Service Corporation first implemented a network surveillance solution from Axis Communications for its new Wakaba Sawayaka Garden Care House. An IP network was installed during construction, and Axis PoE network cameras were chosen for the new surveillance setup. Because the cameras support Power over Ethernet, there was no need to install additional electrical wiring. 13 network cameras were installed throughout the building, including the Axis 212PTZ, the Axis 210A, and the Axis 211.

Greece's Egnatia Motorway is a monumental road construction project linking Europe and Asia. Developers have turned to Axis network cameras as a way to provide wireless traffic surveillance to the motorway's most difficult route, a 9 km stretch of varied terrain that runs from the Metsovo interchange to the Peristeri interchange. Wall-mounted and bullet cameras are used for detail shots - getting specific information like facial features on persons of interest, for example.
