Pittsburg Police View Live Surveillance Footage on Smartphone Devices

Published by Ellen on August 13, 2012 9:31 AM

Thanks to Milestone Systems’ pioneering mobile phone application, the Pittsburg Police Department is now able to view live public surveillance footage on their Androids and Apple Smartphones. Prior to the discovery of such an application, the department viewed all 86 cameras in a monitoring room, which slowed their response to on-camera crime.

Installed in 2005, the city’s video surveillance cameras are peppered throughout high-traffic areas like gas stations, intersections, and parks. The Pittsburg Police is the only department in Contra Costa County to harness this new technology.

Now police officers will be able to view surveillance footage from their squad cars or on foot, giving them instantaneous access while out patrolling. This new method of viewing video will allow officers to watch live video feed from local surveillance cameras.

Additionally, officers are able to zoom in on video while viewing it on their Smartphone, providing them with close-up, discernible footage. The Smartphone application has already been instrumental in tackling crime: one of the department officers was able to make a quick arrest after viewing real-time footage of someone at a bus station openly smoking rock cocaine from a crack pipe.
