Orlando to install smart surveillance cameras to assist law enforcement

Thanks to a grant from the US Department of Homeland Security, Orlando residents will soon see a new landmark in public areas. Smart surveillance cameras for project IRIS (Innovative Response to Improve Safety) will be installed in public areas around Orlando, with the intent of improving the response of law enforcement to urgent situations.

The cameras, which have been compared to robots, were purchased by both Homeland Security grant funds and contributions from local businesses that want improved response to emergency situations. Advanced and equipped with sensitive analytics that can detect movement and activity, the cameras will be installed in three dangerous Orlando neighborhoods in a test run to gauge their success.

Should the cameras be effective at more efficiently notifying officers of crimes in progress, they will be installed in areas around Orlando.
