Do drink the water. Security camera system keeps Water Operations Center safe

Garland, Texas is taking long strides to ensure that the city's water is safe. The biggest step involves the recent relocation of its Water Operation Center to an unmarked building equipped with a comprehensive video surveillance system.

Several years back, Garland conducted a vulnerability test to see what areas of the city might be susceptible to a terrorist plot. The results showed that it was far too easy for anyone and everyone to mosey on in to the old Water Operation Center. The thought of someone tampering with the water system was so, well, unthinkable, that the facility didn't have a single camera or security system established.

Flash forward to today, and the new building and the city's water supply are well protected by some serious state-of-the-art security equipment, including a number of sophisticated security cameras operating across a hack-proof fiber-optic network. Water systems operators now monitor 18 surveillance cameras which provide uninterrupted footage of the city's water tanks and manholes. The city has space for 50 security cameras, and there are plans to install more to the downtown area.

Video surveillance is just a part of the security plan which also includes GPS tracking for all water operations vehicles. Needless to say, Garland is committed to ensuring its water is well protected.
