Rapid growth expected for DIY home surveillance market

Published by Dan on May 7, 2008 8:41 AM

A recent study by MultiMedia Intelligence predicts huge growth for the do-it-yourself (DIY) home surveillance market in the coming years. The study anticipates the consumer DIY surveillance camera market to reach over $1 billion dollars by 2012.

There are a number of reasons for this expected growth. Many manufactures are starting to offer affordable, all-in-one home surveillance packages that include digital security cameras, network adapters, and software, allowing for remote video monitoring over the Internet. The availability of these systems is already growing in retail outlets.

Another factor is the emergence of a new class of consumer IP surveillance cameras. It doesn't cost a fortune to buy an IP camera anymore. There are affordable models designed to handle the security needs of home owners. And as technology continues to improve and the costs go down, more IP surveillance offerings become available at more reasonable prices.

Also, the installed base of video-capable home networks is growing, and broadband service providers are even beginning to look into offering remote surveillance management and monitoring services.

It's easy to see why this market is poised to boom, and we can expect to see many more camera manufacturers jumping on board with consumer-level home surveillance offerings.
