Vivotek SD7151 helps South African farm ward off poachers
A farm in South Africa recently deployed a new surveillance system using Vivotek SD7151 speed dome IP cameras. Farmers in that region are particularly susceptible to crime especially theft of livestock from poachers. The farm had previously attempted to set up a surveillance system using wired CCTV equipment, but the complicated installation, hefty amounts of cable, and large expense soon had farm operators looking for another solution.
Implementing surveillance systems for agriculture applications pose some unique challenges. The cameras must cover large physical areas without the use of a network infrastructure such as cables and the cameras must provide accurate and clear footage even at night.
The farm turned to a system of Vivotek SD7151 speed dome IP cameras operating over a wireless network. The SD7151 has the ability to provide clear details even under difficult lighting conditions. The network camera is equipped with a removable IR cut filters to accept IR illumination as the lighting conditions darken allowing the camera to switch from color footage to black and white images to provide the best possible picture quality. The Vivotek SD7151 also has a continuous 360° pan and 90° tilt.
The cameras were mounted on 30 meter towers at strategic locations around the farm, with the farmer’s house being used as the surveillance control center. From there the farmer can simultaneously view real-time feeds from all of the cameras. A motion-triggered alarm system will also alert the farmer and other farm workers to any suspicious activity even if they are not at the video monitors.
